Car and Driver Reviews the 2017 Ford Escape: Strong Swimmer in a Sea of Small Crossovers

Ford's (already great) Escape, has received a significant mid-cycle refresh for 2017. The result, according to Car and Driver, is an even better small crossover that stands out from the crowd with it's handsome, athletic stance, a revamped cabin that now has the Ford's excellent SYNC 3 infotainment system, and new EcoBoost engine options that add power and fuel efficiency to the menu.

640 × 480?

The base engine in the Escape is still a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that makes 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. It's rated at a respectable 21 mpg city and 28 mpg highway by the EPA. New for 2017 are two EcoBoost engines. The smaller of the two is a 1.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 179 horsepower and 177 pound-feet of torque. It's good for an EPA fuel economy rating of up to 23 mpg city and 30 mpg highway. Meanwhile, the bigger (and more expensive) 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder manages to pump out 245 horsepower and 275 pound-feet of torque, while still getting up to 22 mpg city and 29 mpg highway. With the 2.0-liter turbo, the 2017 Ford Escape can pull up to a class-leading 3,500 pounds. Escapes with either EcoBoost engine are also available with all-wheel drive./p>

The Escape comes in three trims for 2017: S, SE and Titanium. Car and Driver recommends the Escape SE for most crossover shoppers. It comes with dual-zone automatic climate control, a cloth interior, a power driver's seat and a six-speaker stereo system. Car and Driver also recommends adding the 201A Equipment Group package for $1395. That will get you nicely outfitted with Sync 3 and Sync Connect (which pairs with your smartphone and allows you to lock and unlock and even remote start your Escape right from your devices), an 8.0-inch touchscreen, blind-spot monitoring with cross-traffic alert, reverse sensing, voice recognition, and extra USB port.

If leather upholstery is important, opt for the Escape Titanium. You'll also get a better audio system - a 10-speaker Sony setup - along with a rear 110-volt outlet, a hands-free power liftgate and the full suite of Ford's new advanced driver-assist systems, which includes adaptive cruise control, automatic high beams, lane keeping alert and assistance, collision warning with brake support and enhanced active park assist.
